What is Window Tint Filing and Why to Avoid it On Teslas
Many Tesla tint installers will not spend the time to precision-cut window film to the window edge. Instead, they will over-cut the material and use a file to smooth the edge to the glass envelope. This shortcut saves time but leads to potential edge-pealing and fraying over time. We put in the extra effort and produce higher-quality work than other tint shops.
Tesla door and window construction is unique to the automotive industry. Many car manufacturers build a metal window frame around the door body that contains the window. However, Teslas are built without an upper window frame. The glass itself seals against the door surround. We call this a “frameless” window. The top of the Tesla glass is visible, and any gap in the window film and the glass edge is noticeable. The glass rests into the upper window seal with typical window frames, hiding any gap between the film and the glass edge.
The other thing that makes Tesla unique regarding tinting is its auto-retracting window. You might not even notice that when you open and close your door, the window retracts 10mm. This feature helps avoid potential window damage. When we apply the window tint, we work with the door open. That means we can’t just cut the film to the bottom of the slightly retracted window. If we did, there would be a noticeable gap in the window tint as soon as you close your door. Our technicians over-cut the film and painstakingly fit it below the window seal to ensure a perfect fit and premium look.
